Lessons

Learning to make music

I teach piano, voice, guitar, bass and drums, plus songwriting and HSC music. Beginners through to advanced.

Bachelor of Music in Composition and Music Production, Australian Institute of Music. Piano since the age of five, trained in jazz, and still releasing records every year.

What I teach

Piano

From first scales to advanced repertoire. I specialise in intermediate and advanced players who want to get unstuck.

Voice

Breath, pitch and stamina for singers of any style. I sing in a heavy band, so screams and cleans are both on the table.

Guitar

Chords, riffs and the reading that makes learning a song faster than watching a tab video.

Bass

Timing, tone and locking in with a drummer. Most bass problems are rhythm problems.

Drums

Groove first, then rudiments and independence. We use a click early, because recording is honest.

Songwriting

How a song is built: structure, melody, lyric and the edit. We finish things rather than collect fragments.

HSC music

Composition, musicology and performance prep, from a composition graduate who still releases records.

Band mentoring

Rehearsal discipline, arrangement and set pacing for a whole band in one room.

Why learn from a working musician

I'm not a teacher who used to play. I write, record and release music every year, and I bring whatever I learned making the last record into the next lesson. If a student wants to understand how a song is actually built, I can show them one I built.

Every player I've taught got further by playing less and listening more.
